This is a Bridges Curriculum Clinical Immersive Experience (CIEx), which provide medical students in Foundations 2 opportunities to broaden and enhance their professional development in health care settings different from those of their core clerkships. Students will have opportunities to recognize common diagnoses in neurosurgery practice, observe common procedures, and compose treatment plans for these common conditions. Students will serve as part of the patient care team.

NEURO SURG 130.02  CIEx - Neurosurgery Apprenticeship  (3 Units)  Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer  

Prerequisite(s): NSURG 130.03 or other Neurosurgery experience in F1.

This is a Bridges Curriculum Clinical Immersive Experience (CIEx), which provide medical students in Foundations 2 opportunities to broaden and enhance their professional development in health care settings different from those of their core clerkships. This CIEx is for students who have already had exposure to neurosurgery. Students without prior exposure to neurosurgery should first enroll in NSURG 130.03. Students spend 2 weeks with 1-2 faculty members to see the life of a neurosurgeon.

During this CIEx, the student spends 2 weeks with the team of neurosurgery residents at Parnassus rounding on patients and going to the operating room. Students also join residents for academic conferences.

During this CIEx, the student spends 2 weeks with the team of neurosurgery residents at Mission Bay or Children’s Hospital Oakland rounding on patients and going to the operating room. Students also join residents for academic conferences.

NEURO SURG 140.01  Advanced Neurosurgery Clerkship  (3-11 Units)  Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer  

Restrictions: UCSF does not accept international students for clinical experiences.

Activities: Lecture, Clinical

The clinical clerkships allow students considering a residency in neurological surgery to work with our faculty and the current residents in all aspects of the neurosurgery service, as well as interact with faculty in other departments who regularly work with the Department of Neurological Surgery. Students can rotate at all our teaching hospitals.

NEURO SURG 140.03  Advanced Inpatient Clerkship 2  (6 Units)  Fall, Winter, Summer  

Prerequisite(s): 140.01, NEURO SURG 140.01

Restrictions: UCSF Students Only

Activities: Clinical, Conference

This four week advanced sub-internship is completed after the student finishes Neurosurgery 140.01: Advanced Inpatient Clerkship and allows the student to become an even more integral part of the neurosurgery service , assisting members of the house staff and faculty. Activities continue to include ward and ICU rounds, observing and assisting in the OR, taking night call, and attending grand rounds and other teaching conferences, but with even deeper involvement than Neurosurgery 140.01

NEURO SURG 140.05  Clinical Neurosurgery  (1.5-3 Units)  Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer  

Prerequisite(s): MS3 or MS4 standing.

Restrictions: MS3, MS4

Students will shadow a resident and interact with faculty accordingly in the operating room, inpatient setting and outpatient clinic. Student experiences will differ by site but may include treatment of movement disorders, epilepsy, pediatric and adult brain tumors, head and spinal trauma (operative and non-operative management), hydrocephalus, aneurysms, peripheral nerve disorders and disc disease.
